Marcus Aurelius, from Meditations
Some things hurry into existence as other things hurry out, and many of those things hurrying into existence are already dying. Motion and change continuously renew the world, just as time rushes in to replace the past.
In this rushing stream where there is no rest, what is of value? Isn’t love just as if we fell for one of the sparrows flying by, already almost out of sight?
This is how life is for us all: breathe in, breathe out. Moment to moment this teaches us to give the air back just as we learned yesterday or the day before when we were born — give everything back. (Meditations 6.15)
